NOTICE OF SPECIAL ELECTION

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to Resolution No. 1-25 adopted by the Burley City Council on March 4, 2025, a special election will be held in the City of Burley on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, between the hours of 8:00 o’clock A.M. and 8:00 o’clock P.M. for the purpose of voting upon the question and proposition of increasing the levy on the taxable property within the City of Burley by the amount necessary to produce the sum of ($360,000.00) in excess of that otherwise allowed by law, for each of the tax years 2025 and 2026, to provide additional funding for the Burley Public Library as provided in Resolution No. 1-25 of the Burley City Council adopted on the  4th day of March, 2025.

 

The Burley City Council has adopted the following Official Statement:

On May 20, 2025, a special election will be held on the question of a levy to provide additional funding for the Burley Public Library as provided in Resolution No. 1-25 of the Burley City Council adopted on the 4th day of March, 2025.  The levy will be assessed for the two tax years 2025 and 2026, and it is estimated that Three Hundred Sixty Thousand Dollars ($360,000.00) in excess of that otherwise allowed by law will be collected each year. 

The question to be submitted to the electors of the City of Burley shall be by ballot reading substantially as follows:

FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS, LEVY FUNDS OF $360,000 SHALL PROVIDE 61% OF THE LIBRARY’S GENERAL OPERATING BUDGET. FUNDS WILL SUPPORT PATRON ACCESS TO SHARED LIBRARY MATERIALS, SOFTWARE, EQUIPMENT, AND THE PURCHASE OF BOOKS, E-BOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS, AND VISUAL MEDIA. ADDITIONALLY, FUNDS WILL COVER LIBRARIAN AND SUPPORT STAFF SALARIES, INTERNS, SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE, AND CONTRACTED INTERNET TECHNICAL SUPPORT. THE ESTIMATED ANNUAL COST TO TAXPAYERS IS $27.88 PER $100,000 OF TAXABLE ASSESSED VALUE, BASED ON CURRENT CONDITIONS.

SHALL THE LEVY UPON THE TAXABLE PROPERTY WITHIN THE CITY OF BURLEY BE INCREASED TO PRODUCE THE SUM OF THREE HUNDRED SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS ($360,000.00) IN EXCESS OF THAT OTHERWISE ALLOWED BY LAW, FOR EACH OF THE TAX YEARS 2025 AND 2026, TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR THE BURLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY AS PROVIDED IN RESOLUTION NO. 1-25 OF THE BURLEY CITY COUNCIL ADOPTED ON THE 4TH DAY OF MARCH, 2025?

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that in accordance with the Help America Vote Act of 2002, each of the polling places includes parking spaces, path of travel, entrances, exits and voting areas accessible to individuals with disabilities. Qualified electors shall vote at the following precinct polling stations designated by Cassia County and Minidoka County.
